Job Type: Description:- The PACU nurse is responsible for assessing the patient post anesthesia: checking vital signs, pain, the site of incision, temperature, respirations and assessing cognitive functioning. The PACU nurse should have a thorough knowledge of pain medication and be able to use his/her own judgment of a patients pain. Duties of a PACU nurse include changing of dressings, turning a patient, teaching breathing exercises and pain management.
The PACU nurse is specialty trained to assess the patients post-surgery condition and report any complications that may have arisen to the physician. Patients on the Step Down unit are acutely ill and require close monitoring however their condition is not critical enough to require admission to the ICU, conversely patients leaving the ICU may need to go to step down for closer monitoring then the med surg/tele floors can provide. Step Down nurses have extensive knowledge of disease and pathology, they are proficient in cardiac monitoring and utilize critical thinking when assessing, monitoring and implementing care plans. Step down nurses prepare the patient for discharge through encouraging therapies, educating and providing emotional support. They report any changes in condition to the physician and work well with an interdisciplinary team. Step down nurses are able to recognize and act quickly in an emergency.One year current experience in a Step Down, Intermediate Care Unit or ICU required. BCLS and ACLS certification required.
